Towing the albatross
« on: September 20, 2012, 02:28:22 PM »
I know this is not a car-forum, but to tow the boat you need a car.
What is the right classic-car to town a classic-albatross?
I'm looking for a Ford Anglia 100E about 1960, the same engine as in the boat 8)
It's the model before the Harry Potter filmcar, that must be the 105e.
Maybe, the Ford popular and prefect had the same engine.
If anybody knows a car like that, in blue-withe....
I'm very intersted!

You are right, it was expensive, best quality and sporty.
So maybe a MGA from 1960 will be a good choice :D.

In 1963-1968 on Southern Lake Windermere, there were a number of Albatross's.. One I remember was towed behind a Mk1 Cortina, another behind an Ford Zephyr, another a Singer Gazelle (Hillman Minx) and a 1600 Delta behind a Mk2 3.8 Jaguar.. Personally, I'd go for a Land Rover, as most of the above will be now be just large piles of rust :)

Sorry, but being a Triumph  man, we have a client  who tows a large caravan with his 1968 mk1 Triumph saloon 2500 pi, he says he hardly feels its presence, personally, I don't believe him, but .... :-X
If you don't know where to start... start somewhere, the rest falls into place.

Archie Peace towed his boats with a Mk10 Jag / 420g and a Rover P5B coupe .... if it was good enough for him I'd guess that it's good enough for us ?
On a personal view, I'd say to keep it in line with the running gear of the boats being mainly Ford, the top end Fords of the period were the Ford V8 Pilot, Zodiac Mk2 or Mk3 executive ....it depends on what age boat you have ? a 1958 Albatross Continental would look very at home behind a High line Zodiac or Farnham estate

An Albatross Alpine has to be towed by a Sunbeam Alpine of course but other Albatrosses would look good behind any period Humber or a convertible Sunbeam Rapier.
