Jetstar 520
« on: February 13, 2017, 11:21:58 AM »
Hi

Just posting a few pictures from our Jetstar 520.

It hasn't been used for 30 years now but still looks good. We demounted the gas cable to put grease on it and that should be reinstalled.

The engine started immediately 30 years ago but I wonder about that now  ;D

Best,

Arjan

Hi Arian, the Jetstars were well built, but it might be asking a bit much after 30 years!! However, I specialize in classic cars and we always get them going in the end. It's definitely worth a look that's for sure. Any current pics?  Mark

Hi Mark

Not easy getting pictures as I am not in Portugal and the boat is behind a lot of stuff.
I have one more picture of the dashboard.

Still trying to get more pictures ...

Your remark re classic cars makes me curious  ;)

Hi Arjan, I fix / restore / upgrade classic cars, so starting old engines after 30+ years all part of the job! I'd probably disconnect the fan belt, clean out the carburettor, clean the points, check or change the oil & 'give it a go' !! you might be surprised  ;D.
But only for less than a minute as you start to get things too hot.  You'll probably have to change the raw water pump impellor, the water pump, alternator, fuel pump, rubber fuel pipes, points, condensor & battery, but worth a quick go first to see if it will go.

Hi Arjan
Your 520 looks totally original.
Good luck with the engine but as it seems
to have run for only 98 hours I am sure a bit
of TLC will get it going again.
Have you owned it from new?

Hi Alan,

The boat is from 1977.

My father bought it new and imported it from the UK. He does not remember the name but I understand he bought it directly from Bluebird.

He bought it specifically to avoid his kids being hurt by the propellor.

The main reason I got a Jetstar was that it is a classic car on water! It is one of the best made hulls I've ever seen, well assembled with quality parts, with a car engine I could tweak & a jet unit that is beautifully engineered. What more can anyone ask for ??! Since it's restoration, it's the best pub taxi by far. Taking 9 to the Shipwrights Arms in the summer means only one trip!  :D
